The Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council (BYNC) in partnership with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), launched an early action project as part of the Great Neighborhoods Community Planning initiative last Saturday Nov. 12. Its overall purpose is to engage residents, business owners, institutions and other stakeholders to improve the quality of life in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

This initiative, according to Irene Lopez, Great Neighborhoods Project director at the BYNC, will address the community in a comprehensive manner, including housing, industrial and commercial development, community facilities, education, youth and recreation.

To mark the beginning of a sequence of community projects, Saturday’s event invited residents to pick up paint and brushes and move along neighborhood alleys to cover up graffiti painted on garages.

Moving forward, the Great Neighborhoods Community Planning initiative will also take a comprehensive approach to community development – in addition to physical improvements, including good schools, parks, health and child care, safety, social services and opportunities for economic advancement.

Promoting collaboration between neighborhood organizations is a priority through the initiative.

“We’ve been trying so hard for a long time to unite the community but we really haven’t achieved a satisfactory outcome,” said Lopez. “This time with the Quality of Life plan and through LISC, we’re trying to get everyone to the table to work for the same goal, which is making the neighborhood a better place.”

Neighborhood organizations have already begun to work together. A clear example of that, according to Lopez, is the recent partnership between the Neighboring Housing Services and the Resurrection Project to rehab foreclosed homes in the neighborhood and encourage residents to stay in the Back of the Yards and value their community.

“The Great Neighborhoods Program will help the Back of the Yards plan for its long term future. Instead of reacting, Back of the Yards is being proactive,” said Raul Raymundo, Chief Executive Officer of the Resurrection Project. “We are going to highlight the assets of Back of the Yards to attract new life as well as investment and opportunities.”

One of the Resurrection Project’s main goals is to return home ownership to the neighborhood.

“We are committed to working with many organizations in Back of the Yards to strengthen the community,” said Raymundo.

To ensure overall program success, the BYNC has organized a task force responsible for communications, outreach, scheduling and preparing bilingual materials.

The role of the task force is to advise other community leaders, participate in meetings, provide feedback on findings, speak at planning meetings and coordinate the implementation of the plan.

Some of the expected outcomes include the creation of the data book containing community maps and secondary data (i.e. demographics, facilities, city-owned properties, building conditions, land use, housing and crime), along with community strengths and a list of proposed projects as well as up-to-date information relating barriers to progress.

The initiative, though new to many residents, calls for unity and engagement. After Saturday’s event a number of residents asked Lopez if they could be provided with paint to continue painting over the graffiti in the area and some want to get involved in future initiatives.

“I know the graffiti is going to continue to show up,” said Lopez. “But just seeing the community come together on the block to beautify their own communities, demonstrates that the interest is there and it’s instilling them to want to continue to build upon it.”

BYNC Lanza Proyecto de Acción Temprana para Plan de Calidad de Vida

El Concilio de Back of the Yards (BYNC) en conjunto con la Corporación de Apoyo a las Iniciativas Locales (LISC), lanzaron un proyecto de acción temprana como parte de la iniciativa de Planificación Comunitaria de los Grandes Vecindarios el pasado sábado 12 de noviembre. Su propósito general es motivar a los residentes, comerciantes, instituciones y demás partes interesadas para mejorar la calidad de vida en el vecindario de Back of the Yards.

Esta iniciativa, según Irene López, directora del proyecto Grandes Vecindarios del BYNC, se ocupará de la comunidad de manera integral, incluyendo desarrollo de vivienda, industrial, comercial, instalaciones comunitarias, educación, jóvenes y recreación.

Para marcar el comienzo de una secuencia de proyectos comunitarios, el evento del sábado invitó a los residentes a tomar pintura y brochas e ir por los callejones de la comunidad para cubrir el grafiti pintado en las cocheras.

Avanzando, la iniciativa de Planificación Comunitaria de los Grandes Vecindarios también tendrá un enfoque integral del desarrollo comunitario—además de mejoras físicas, incluyendo buenas escuelas, parques cuidados infantiles y de salud, seguridad, servicios humanos, servicios sociales y oportunidades de avance económico.

Promover la colaboración entre las organizaciones comunitarias es una prioridad a través de la iniciativa. “Por mucho hemos intentado arduamente unir a la comunidad pero en realidad no hemos logrado un resultado satisfactorio”, dijo López. “En esta ocasión con el plan de Calidad de Vida y a través de LISC estamos tratando de que todo mundo se una para trabajar por el mismo objetivo, el cual es hacer del vecindario un mejor lugar”.

Las organizaciones comunitarias ya han comenzado a trabajar juntas. Un claro ejemplo de eso, según López es la reciente colaboración entre Neighborhood Housing Services y Proyecto Resurrección para rehabilitar las viviendas embargadas en el vecindario e instar a los residentes para que se queden en Back of the Yards y valoren su comunidad.

“El programa de Grandes Vecindarios ayudará a Back of the Yards a planear su futuro a largo plazo. En lugar de reaccionar, Back of the Yards está siendo proactivo”, dijo Raúl Raymundo, presidente del Proyecto Resurrección. Vamos a resaltar lo positivo de Back of the Yards para atraer nueva vida además inversiones y oportunidades”.

Uno de los objetivos principales de Proyecto Resurrección es regresar la propiedad de vivienda al vecindario. “Estamos comprometidos a trabajar con muchas organizaciones en Back of the Yards para fortalecer la comunidad”, dijo Raymundo.

Para garantizar el éxito total del programa, el BYNC ha organizado a una fuerza de trabajo responsable de las comunicaciones, alcance, programación y preparación de materiales bilingües. 

El papel de la fuerza especial es asesorar a otros miembros de la comunidad, participar en reuniones, proporcionar información sobre los resultados, hablar en las reuniones de planificación y coordinar la implementación del plan.

Algunos de los resultados esperados incluyen la creación de un libro de datos que incluya mapas comunitarios y datos secundarios (eje. demografía, comodidades, propiedades de la ciudad, condiciones de inmuebles, uso terrenal, vivienda y crimen), junto con los puntos fuertes de la comunidad y una lista de proyectos propuestos, además de información actualizada relacionando los obstáculos del progreso.

La iniciativa, aunque nueva para muchos residentes, pide unidad y participación. Después del evento del sábado un número de residentes le preguntaron a López si se les podría proporcionar pintura para continuar pintando sobre el grafiti en el área y algunos desean participar en futuras iniciativas.

“Yo sé que el grafiti seguirá apareciendo”, dijo López. “Pero tan sólo con ver a la comunidad unirse en la cuadra para embellecer sus propias comunidades, demuestra que el interés está allí y los inculca para seguir fomentándolo”.
